Everyone seems to be getting into the Christmas spirit early this year, don't you find? I think maybe a lot of us are craving the sense of beauty and togetherness that comes with the holidays. My daughter wanted to do all the Christmas decorating this past weekend, but we just didn't have the time - what with a basketball tournament and our continued foyer renovations.
I did manage to find some time this weekend to make these cute DIY Christmas tree ornaments. A deadline always helps to motivate me, and today is deadline day, as I'm joining a group of other bloggers to not only share our Christmas ornament DIYs, but also to give away a new mint green Cricut Explore Air™ 2 machine! I know there are lots of you who would love to get a Cricut for Christmas, so read on to enter below.
When I was on the hunt for a Christmas ornament to diy with the Cricut, I saw a Christmas 3D Tree Place Card in the Cricut Design Space. With a few modifications, I knew it would make a super cute ornament for my Christmas tree.
I purchased some glittery card stock at Michaels, both for a future Christmas banner and for my tree ornament. For this project, you also need ribbon to hang the trees with and a glue gun. And a Cricut machine, of course.
I simply purchased the (inexpensive) design and then modified it slightly to make ornaments rather than place cards (although they would be fun to have too). I deleted the little banner that would have been used to write a guest's name on the place card. I realized rather late that I didn't own the necessary Cricut scoring stylus to score the fold marks, so I deleted the score marks from the design and then just folded the paper myself.
Because the glitter paper I chose is white on the back, I had to glue the pieces of the tree together carefully so there wouldn't be a lot of white exposed. I figure a bit on the edges is okay though - it looks like snow! For my second ornament, I modified the design to make the tree a bit larger. My hands are big and I found it easier to glue the larger ornament together. Finally, rather than gluing the three stars in the design together I chose to make it easier by gluing only two stars on each tree, back to back. I glued small lengths of silver and gold ribbon to the back of each star to hang the trees with.
We haven't been to the Christmas tree farm to get our tree yet, so I made a little tree from branches I clipped off a tree in our front yard. I tied two branches together with twine and stuck them in a glass vase full of smooth rocks. I surrounded my wee "Christmas tree" with some of the gifts I wrapped in my diy linocut print kraft paper Christmas gift wrap.
I made a few extra, larger stars in silver and gold to hang from the tree as well. You could also glue some tiny stars or circles to the ornament trees to create "ornaments" within your ornament. Another fun idea is to print a bunch of little stars in your home decor's colour scheme to sprinkle down the middle of your table at Christmas dinner. My daughter wants to make a star garland too. When we get the time...
