As I mentioned in this post, one of my goals this new year is to expose myself and my family to more of the arts, in particular galleries, museums and theatrical performances. We do some of these activities each season, but not as much as we would like. It's sometimes difficult to fit in excursions once work, household tasks and the kids' scheduled activities are out of the way.
But it's important that we make the effort. When time and funds are short, schools typically reduce the time that kids spend involved in the arts. They focus on training the left brain (with math, science, etc.) and leave the right brain to fend for itself. That's where parents come in. With kids focused so much on electronics nowadays, I think it's even more important that we hand them art materials, craft kits and paper, encouraging them to give their creativity free reign. And part of unearthing your own creativity is witnessing the creativity of others - paintings and sculptures in a gallery, musical performances and theatrical productions. Oh, and ballet. I really want to see the ballet soon!
With this is mind, I'm super thrilled to be attending a performance of the Shaw Festival's production of Alice in Wonderland this spring. Last year we were fortunate to see the Shaw Fest's production of Peter and the Starcatcher. We were so impressed by the quality of the production and, most of all, the skills and talents of the actors.
As a bonus, Shaw Festival performances take place at theatres around beautiful Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. If you haven't been there before (or even if you have), be sure to make a day or two out of it. This picturesque little town is not to be missed! And it's right down the road from Niagara Falls. And don't forget it's wine country too! So much to do...
About The Production
Alice in Wonderland at the Shaw Festival is a fascinating take on the beloved 1865 novel by Lewis Carroll - a newly commissioned adaptation written especially for the Shaw acting company. The play is set on a summer day in 1862. Alice Little and her two sisters are told a story about a little girl, a white rabbit and a trip down a hole into a world like no other. There will be stunning visuals, theatrical magic, original songs and inspiring characters such as the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, the Mock Turtle and the Queen of Hearts.
Watch as Alice tries to make sense of this world of grown-up nonsense. A magical musical experience for children and the child inside of you! "Three years ago, Peter Hinton came to me with the idea of adapting Alice in Wonderland specifically for our company," notes Jackie Maxwell, Artistic Director. "I was thrilled. We assembled a crack creative team who have since worked tirelessly – meeting, workshopping, rethinking, recreating, re-workshopping… and on. The result is a beautiful piece of theatre that merges a deep love and knowledge of the Victorian period with striking, innovative contemporary technology – truly a feast for all members of the family.”
I just know that it's going to be great! "This really is the best ride this summer - the ride down the rabbit hole," says Jackie Maxwell. Watch this video in which Jackie talks further about the production.
