This is the second post in my "Products We Love" series. I reserve this feature for earth- and people-friendly products that my family uses and loves. And we love Sweets from the Earth! This Toronto-based bakery makes delicious desserts that just about anybody can eat.
The list of benefits to Sweets from the Earth's yummy baked goods is long - they are all natural, 100% vegan, trans fat free, non-hydrogenated, GMO free, made without artificial colours or flavours, preservative free AND free from refined sugars. But still amazingly delicious!
Sweets from the Earth also offers nut-free products, like these beautiful cupcakes. They have a range of gluten-free options too, so there's a Sweets from the Earth treat for just about anybody. In fact, I bought their tasty vegan blueberry cheesecake at Christmastime for the dairy-free members of my family. Everybody should get a decadent treat after a special dinner!
My family and I recently sampled a selection of Sweets from the Earth cupcakes, including this gorgeous lavender cupcake, as well as an iced vanilla cupcake, a "hot chocolate" cupcake with a marshmallow topping (yum!) and a cream-filled cupcake. All decadently delicious, natural and vegan. The company even uses natural fruit and vegetable extracts for colouring.
We have also been enjoying Sweets from the Earth's gourmet cookie doughs. These are so convenient - pop a bunch in the freezer and you can make a quick, warm, gourmet cookie at a moment's notice. They have both regular and gluten-free options too, so keep one in the freezer if you have a gluten-free friend or family member who might drop by.
Just defrost the package for 10 minutes or so, scoop dough onto a cookie sheet by the tablespoon and bake! To be honest, I couldn't really judge how many cookies each package makes. I'll have to trust Sweets from the Earth on that one, because I ate so much of the uncooked dough. With no egg, you can eat the dough with abandon!
In the case of the organic ginger molasses cookies, you roll the dough balls in sugar first. This results in a pretty cookie that's perfect for your special occasion cookie platter.
The organic ginger molasses cookies are beautiful, golden cookies with a wonderful aroma and a softy, chewy centre.
Of course, Sweets from the Earth has chocolate chip varieties too - both regular and gluten free. The dough results in cookies with an abundance of chocolate chips, for big bites of warm, chocolatey cookie.
My humble recommendation is to bake more than one variety of cookie at once. That way, you get a couple of warm, gourmet cookie options in one go.
The cookies make a great after-school snack, eaten right at the stove in my son's case. Why not greet your kids with the smell of fresh-baked cookies once in a while? It's a guilt-free plan when you use an all natural, healthy, vegan option.
And the kids will never know it's a healthier option. Just look at the smile on my daughter's face as she goes back for seconds.
Sweets from the Earth also offers a gluten-free gourmet brownie batter, which you can make in mini muffin tins or in a 6" cake pan. The batter produces a rich, dark brownie that's fudgy in the centre.
If you like to pair your chocolate with more chocolate, then the double chocolate cookie batter is the one for you!
About Sweets from the Earth
Sweets from the Earth founder Ilana became a vegetarian at the age of 7 after her dad went hunting with a friend and served up rabbit stew. Ilana began began preparing food for herself and learned to love cooking and later baking. When she adopted a vegan lifestyle years later, she was determined not to give up luscious, decadent desserts. She decided to learn the craft and science of baking in pastry school and soon discovered that no animals or animal by-products need be used to make sweet delicious treats. In 2002, Sweets from the Earth was born. The company now has two facilities - one dedicated dairy, egg, peanut and nut free, the other dairy, egg, wheat and gluten free. Check out the full range of products available.
