Insta-Friday in real life

A look back at the week using simple, sweet cell phone photos. That's the idea behind Insta-Friday. The "sweet" is optional. While this looks like a pretty scene, above, it's actually our van stopped at the side of the road on the way to the cottage last weekend.

The kids behaved well for most of the trip, but they got a little out of control at the end. When fists start to fly we generally pull over. This time, the husband and I actually got out of the car. (Don't worry, we took the keys with us.) Kids are pretty impatient. We have found they will behave in order to get back on the road.

Then it was on to the library book sale with my mom.

After that we checked out some vintage and thrift shops in town.

The guy at Time Capsule sells a whole bunch of cool, vintage chairs and dishes. Visit his website if you want to see more.

Love the record player.

We were at my sister's place on Sunday. The thrift store we like was closed, so we headed over to Big Lots to pick up some bargains. That's my sister shopping. She's like me - we hit absolutely every aisle so we don't miss some great deal.

My sister gave me some early birthday presents, like this owl candle holder.

And these equestrian-themed rubber boots. My sister's good like that. If she sees footwear for my giant (size 11) feet she picks it up.

With my son at basketball camp every morning this week, my girl has been bored. Luckily she was invited to hot tub at a friend's house one night. The hot tub was like a pool for them.

Instead of going to Italy like we had hoped this year, we are having the exterior of our house revamped a bit. We started by getting new (much fancier) garage doors. This week, it's on to the driveway. The asphalt was so bad it was hard to play basketball.

Rather than paying for interlocking stone all the way down the driveway (which is what I would prefer), we requested a half-moon of tumbled stones at the top of the driveway. The driveway guys told us they would have to fix up the stones on the walkway to the front door to make them level, so we decided to just replace the path with new stones. This ensures that the path and the driveway match up. Asphalt is up next for the remainder of the driveway. Can't wait for this whole (dusty) process to be done.

How are you spending your time this summer?

  1. Well you know, Italy, garage doors- half dozen of one, 6 of the other. Sigh. Home ownership. Those boots & owls are awesome sauce though!!

    1. I know! Bummer! Our home is about 15 years old, so it has never required much maintenance. We are in shock now about how much any work on the house costs!!

Yes, my sister has good taste. :)

  2. Looove the blue sofa!!! Hoping your dusty driveway process is over soon, we just had our roof done and even though it was a short job I couldn't wait for it to be over and for all the crap to be gone from our driveway! Love your garage doors!

    1. Yes, the blue sofa is pretty cool.

We probably have to do our roof next year. We had one guy in to quote on it and he said $9,200 (9652.41 AUS)! Ouch. I will be trying elsewhere.

Thanks, I like the garage doors too. I wanted a Victorian house but it didn't happen so we're trying to add some "older" touches.

  3. I'm going to have to use the whole getting out of the car trick! That's a gem. Love your new garage doors, although a trip to Italy would have been nice.

    1. The trick works especially well if you are going somewhere the kids really want to go! Try it and let me know how it goes. :)

Thanks! Garage doors vs. Italy...I know. I have to buy some lottery tickets. ;)

  4. Wow, so much exciting stuff happening!
I love the owl and the boots and the garage doors are fab and the stone top of the driveway does add a nice fancier detail ;)
I hear you on travel costs vs home renovations - we've been choosing the latter too because we're always home and we realized we want to feel so good at our house that we don't 'need' to get away to travel.
But, Italy would be so nice so some other part of Europe. we went to Rome on our honeymoon so that brings back a lot of great memories ;)

xoxo Have a great weekend Jo! xoxo

    1. I know what you mean - we like to feel comfortable at home too, so the work is important.

We also went to Italy on our honeymoon. That was 14 years ago, so it's time to go back! :)

      Take care,

      Jo
